Graduate Students Tour Port Newark/Elizabeth

April 25, 2023

Efficient freight systems are essential to New Jersey’s economy. Freight and distribution is the largest employer in New Jersey.

Anne Strauss-Weider, Director of Freight Planning for the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), introduces graduate students to the freight system and supply chains that keep our economy moving within the context of policy and planning considerations. A part-time lecturer for the Bloustein School since 2013, she brings guest lecturers to class and often takes students on field trips to see freight conveyance operations in action as a component of her class, Freights and Ports.

In early April the class visited Port Newark/Elizabeth, the principal container ship facility for goods entering and leaving the New York metropolitan area and northeastern North America. Hilary McCarron of the Port Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) which operates the port, gave the students a guided tour of maritime operations including all transportation modes, various types of cargo movements, and environmental and technology initiatives.
