Former NJ Gov. Jim Florio's message to Gov. Phil Murphy on raising taxes: Just do it

May 12, 2018

Jim Florio’s ghost still haunts Trenton like a Shakespearean apparition.

This is not welcome news for Gov. Phil Murphy.  What’s the smiling-brooding Hamlet-like Murphy to do as he dodges questions about whether he really smoked pot or if he can find enough Democrats to vote for a tax hike? On some strange level, you can almost envision Murphy, while strutting through the statehouse as he contemplates the upcoming state budget battles, glumly stopping at Florio’s official portrait on a wall to ask this Shakespearean question:  “To tax or not to tax.”

Florio’s answer is simple: Don’t be afraid.
