Heldrich Report: Voices of the Family Child Care Workforce in NJ
In 2024, the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development launched a statewide survey of registered family child care (FCC) providers in New Jersey as part of the Rutgers Child Care Research Collaborative, an initiative focused on child care in the state. The survey asked individuals who provide child care in their homes to share their voices and experiences — from what inspires them to enter and stay in the field, to the challenges they face in their daily work, and their ideas for making child care a more sustainable and rewarding profession.

Drs. Porumbescu, Walsh and Hetling on SNAP Learning Costs
Our findings demonstrate that enhancing the SNAP information structure lowers learning costs and indirectly improves public support and perceived deservingness of beneficiaries. We discuss implications for theory and practice.
Hetling and McFarland (PP ’24) Acknowledged for TANF Research
The authors conducted an analysis to
determine the extent to which Maryland‘s TCA program incorporates trauma-informed principles into the program. Tables 21 and 22 segment results by trauma-informed domains that were introduced in the Assessment Tools chapter. These domains are part of the Trauma-Informed TANF Evaluative Toolkit based on Dr. Andrea Hetling’s 2019 research.

Cumulatively, our findings demonstrate that efforts to reduce SNAP learning costs are generally effective at improving comprehension recall and that the type of intervention matters, with the video increasing comprehension scores more than the flyer and screening tool.
Laurie Harrington named Executive Dir. of Heldrich Center
Laurie Harrington has been appointed Executive Director of the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. She has been serving as Acting Executive Director of the center since February 2024 and previously served as the center’s Assistant Director of Evaluation.

Dr. Andrea Hetling Travels to South Korea’s Seoul National University and Korea Development Institute
Dr. Andrea Hetling traveled to Korea this summer to present her research at two of the country’s leading universities. Her first stop was Seoul National University for an initiative designed to bring global scholars to campus to share new directions in research. She then visited the Korea Development Institute to present her research and meet with graduate students interested in studying at the Bloustein School.
